We encourage a sense of fair play and good spirit

The sporting program at Ivanhoe encourages active participation, fitness and fun over a comprehensive range of summer and winter sports. Students are encouraged to be active and to enjoy a range of sports in a friendly team environment.

The School is part of the Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria (AGSV) which has nine member schools for boys and the AGSV/APS competition for girls. The Associations have very strong traditions and aim to encourage high standards, and foster a sense of fair play and good spirit between teams and schools

All students take part in the School's sporting program. Students train in their chosen sport during the week and participate in the AGSV/APS competition on Saturday mornings.

A wide variety of sports are offered including Basketball, AFL Football, Soccer, Rugby, Badminton, Volleyball, Hockey, Tennis, Netball, Cricket, Athletics, Swimming, Kayaking and Snowsports. At The Ridgeway Campus Touch Football, Aerobics, Lawn Bowls and Water Polo are also available and Equestrian is also offered at Plenty Campus.

There are also opportunities for students to participate in sporting tours and competitions as well as entry into community-based competitions.

Development Squads are offered in a number of sports for players who show talent and commitment with elite performers able to participate in the AGSV representative teams.

The aim of the School's sporting program is to:

• Assist each student's growth through the discovery of their talents

• Encourage students to contribute to the School community

• Facilitate strong staff-student relationships outside the classroom

The Plenty Campus of Ivanhoe Grammar School has developed an extensive and unique Equestrian Program, providing a range of opportunities for students at the Campus as well as from the wider community. This program enhances the cross-campus academic, sport and co-curricular programs as well as community service.

Interschool Competitions

Ivanhoe Grammar School has provided the benchmark for Interschool Competitions throughout the state, and our students compete regularly at events run throughout the year. These competitions are part of the Victorian Interschool Equestrian Series.

Students may nominate Equestrian as one of their Sports options from Year 7.

The School hosts competitions each year, incorporating the Olympic disciplines of Dressage and Showjumping.  These events are held at Yarrambat Park in Yan Yean Road and attract up to 200 students from over 40 schools throughout Victoria. This includes Government and non-Government (Independent) Primary and Secondary schools as well as Catholic Primary and Secondary schools. We also hold gymkhanas and training days at the Equestrian Centre at the Plenty Campus.

Riding Lessons

Riding lessons are offered to students during school hours and after school as a co-curricular activity, providing opportunities for students from all campuses to experience riding without the commitment of owning their own horse or pony. Ponies and gear are provided and students are given the choice of individual or shared lessons. A fully qualified and experienced NCAS Coach provides these lessons to beginners as well as to more experienced riders.

Kayaking is an exciting and enjoyable outdoor pursuit which provides both physical and mental challenges.Ivanhoe Grammar School has a proud tradition of excellence in kayaking and many Ivanhoe paddlers have gone on to compete nationally and internationally and Alumni regularly return to the School to help train and mentor younger students.

Beginners commence with kayak safety training sessions in the School pool to prepare students to cope with flowing rapids (whitewater). Once students complete initial safety training they progress to regular training sessions throughout the year where they will develop skills and strokes for moving water.

Throughout the year, a number of team camps are offered to the students, which provide further training as well as social opportunities. All equipment required is provided by the School.

The Victorian All Schools Championships are held annually and students compete in the downriver and slalom events.

Students have the opportunity to participate in the Alpine Snowsports Program, which includes Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding. Snowsports is offered to Primary and Secondary students in Term 2 and 3 during the winter season.

Dryland training takes place on Campus in the gym or School oval and a number of training camps take place offsite during Term 3 at Mount Buller or Falls Creek. The training camp provides students with the opportunity to further develop their skills in skiing and snowboarding and also allows the team to socialise and strengthen friendships with their peers as well as with neighbouring schools.

The Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships occur in Term 3. Over 150 schools and nearly 6,000 entries competing annually in the event held at Mount Buller, where students put their skills to the test against competing Snowsports schools in various categories.
